Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) came into inception in the first ever edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) back in 2008. KXIP was jointly purchased by Bollywood actress Preity Zinda, along with Ness Wadia who heads the Wadia Group and Dabur's Mohit Burman. KXIP in first season cashed in on Punjab's very own Yuvraj Singh, had the likes of Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakarra, Simon Katich , Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh, Sreesanth, and Irfan Pathan to accompany him in their title quest. KXIP faulted in the final gasp losing out to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the semi-final by a massive 9 wicket margin. KXIP were also synonyms with the ugly spat between Mumbai Indians Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth in what came to be known as the slap-gate incident. Sangakkara was roped in as skipper for the next season where they ended at fifth place.
The year 2010 was a letdown season for them, 2011 was even more disappointing as it had more off-the field controversies owning to financial irregularities. KXIP could not qualify in 2012 or 2013 either for the semi-final stages, IPL 7 will be remembered as David Millers edition. 2014 was the next best season for KXIP after 2008, finishing as runner-up ably led by George Bailey, had players like Virender Sehwag, Mitchell Johnson and Glenn Maxwell to add to their expertise of players. 2015 again was a haunting season where they finished bottom of the table.
2016 season has seen a wholesome of changes in the squad with David Miller being named as KXIP captain. KXIP so far have retained international players such as Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, and added the likes of Kyle Abbott, Farhaan Behardien and Marcus Stonis to their list.
