Paris: Spanish tennis maestro Rafael Nadal kicked off his French Open tournament on a winning note by brushing aside Australia’s Sam Groth in straight sets to enter the second round of the tournament at the Roland Garros on Tuesday. Fourth-seed Nadal eased past his Australian opponent 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. The match lasted for an hour and 20 minutes. The 14-time Grand Slam champion will next face either Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis or Kenny de Schepper of France. World number two Andy Murray also entered the second round after beating Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek.

After losing the first two sets, Murray staged a strong comeback and survived a nervy fifth-set decider to record a 3-6,3-6 ,6-0 ,6-3, 7-5 over his Czech opponent. Meanwhile, world number one Novak Djokovic will begin his French Open tournament when he takes on Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan later on Tuesday.
