Melbourne: Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna and his Romanian partner Florin Mergea on Thursday claimed a straight-set win over the Australian pair of Omar Jasika and Nick Kyrgios to advance to the second round of the Australian Open. The Indo-Romanian pair brushed aside the Australian pair 7-5, 6-3 in their thrilling opening round contest of the men’s double event. Earlier in January, Bopanna and Mergea lost their hopes of clinching the Sydney Internationaltitle following their 3-6, 6-7(6) defeat at the hands Brazilian-Briton pair of Bruno Soares and Jamie Murray in the summit clash.

Earlier, in December 2015, Roger Federer represented UAE Royals in International Tennis Premier League while Rafel Nadal had been teamed up with the likes of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna in the Indian Aces, who are also the defending champions. However, despite being personally invited by Federer, Tendulkar could not make it to the event on Saturday in Delhi. Federer had personally invited Sachin Tendulkar for his fixture against Rafael Nadal in International Tennis Premier League. The Rafa-FedeX rivalry in Tennis is loved by all the Tennis fans across the globe. Still earlier, in Jully 2012, The AITA was forced to bow down to Mahesh Bhupathi and Bopanna’s wishes after they refused to play with Paes.

Bopanna is a Bangalore-born Indian tennis player who is currently ranked 10th in tennis doubles in the world. His peak ranking is No. 3 which he achieved on July 22, 2012. He is 35-years-old and has been playing tennis since the age of 11.
