Lankan Tigers roar big-time

Sri Lanka through Sanath Jayasuriya gave pinch-hitting in the first 15 overs a new meaning, a principal factor in their road to glory. The tournament drew bad publicity for the refusal of Australia and West Indies to play in Sri Lanka. It didn’t get any worse when Sri Lanka was awarded the semi-final after the Kolkata crowd went berserk on seeing India capitulate. The final will always be remembered for Aravinda de Silva’s all round brilliance in securing his country’s first major tournament victory. The concept of a third umpire also made its debut in this edition.
