Australia had a poor as South Africa bowled the hosts out for a paltry 163. The hosts were reeling at 45 for six when Matthew Wade and Michael Hussey put on a 55-run stand for the seventh wicket before Hussey was dismissed by South Africa's Morne Morkel.

Wade continued to bat on and put on another vital partnership. John Hastings and Wade added 40 runs for the eighth wicket.

The Day ended with South Africa in a commanding position at 230 for two, with Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla at the crease.
