Ed Cowan and Michael Clarke smashed half-centuries to help Australia fight back after they lost three early wickets in their first innings against South Africa.

Australia reached 214 for the loss of three wickets and trailed by 236 runs at lunch. Cowan was unbeaten on 98 and Clarke on 78.
