Clarke's predecessor to Australian captaincy, Ponting, announced Thursday that he would be calling time on his Test career after the third and final Test match against South Africa at Perth.

A win for Australia would propel them to the top of the world rankings in Tests, displacing the Proteas, and Clarke said that it is an added inspiration for his team following the announcement.

A clearly emotional Clarke said that the Australian team would go all guns blazing in the final. "Ricky's announcement will hopefully give us the inspiration to do whatever we can to win this game," said Clarke, fighting back tears at a press conference on Thursday.

Clarke said that he had no feeling the announcement would come so soon. "Ricky spoke to me after the Adelaide Test match (where Ponting scored four and 16) and made his decision over the last few days," he said.
