Australia thumped England by a massive 381-run margin in the first Ashes 2013-14 Test in Brisbane at The Gabba. England were bowled out for 179 in their second innings as Mitchell Johnson took five wickets. A couple of rain delays could not stop Australia’s charge as they wrapped up the match on Day Four itself.

Alastair Cook said, "It's been a tough couple of days. Credit to the way Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson played. You talk about not to lose wickets quickly but credit to Australia they got it right."

"I mean when you have batted only 50 overs in the first innings it becomes tough for bowlers physically. It was a double-edged sword," he said

"Our side has plenty of character and we are going to come back strongly in the game ahead."
