Australia are playing a tour game against Sussex at the Hove in their ongoing Ashes 2013 campaign in England. Ed Cowan led the team in place of Michael Clarke and elected to bat first after winning the toss. Cowan then opened the batting with Phil Hughes and got them off to a very good start. The duo put up 150 before Cowan was dismissed for 66.

Most of Australia's batsmen got significant scores on the board. Matthew Wade was the only failure as he was dismissed for naught. Phil Hughes scored 84, but Steven Smith's attacking 98 not out took Australia to 354 for five at the end of days play. Monty Panesar finished the day with three for 65.
