Australian coach Mickey Arthur said that it is necessary to back the available set of players after four members from the team were dropped from the squad ahead of the third Test.

Arthur also clarified that the players were dropped only for the third Test and not from the entire series.

Earlier, James Pattinson, Shane Watson, Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Johnson were dropped from the squad after they failed to submit a report of three points indicating how they would improve their performance in the upcoming matches.

Watson who flew back to Australia to be with his wife who is due to give birth even contemplated retiring from Test cricket.

Even skipper Michael Clarke defended Arthur's actions and said that it was not a one off incident that resulted in this action but the problem has been there for a while.

Defending his decision to drop the players Arthur said, "It's what right for Australia and what's right for the team now. If you want to play for Australia you can't cut corners."

Arthur's decision was widely discussed and ridiculled by former cricketers. Damien Martyn even termed the action as "absolute joke".
