England skipper Alastair Cook was all praise for Joe Root, comparing his innings with that of Sri Lankan wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara. England won the fifth game of the seven-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka at Pallekele, with Root guiding the chase with a knock of 104 from 117 balls, forming a 104-run partnership with James Taylor, who scored 68 from 90 balls, for the third wicket to build the foundation for the win.

Sangakkara had earlier guided the Sri Lankan innings with a score of 91 from 123 balls, with Sri Lanka folding up at a score of 239. Chris Woakes was the highlight among the English bowlers, taking six wickets for 47 runs, his second-best ODI bowling performance, and the third-best overall by an English bowler. Sri Lanka however, continue to lead the series 3-2, with the crucial sixth ODI scheduled to be contested between the two sides at the same venue.
