Australian all-rounder Daniel Christian took his first hat-trick in the ODI to restrict Sri Lanka to 238 in in the CB Series 12th ODI at Melbourne.

Sri Lanka got off to a shaky start losing skipper Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan early.

Kumar Sangakkara (64) and Dinesh Chandimal (75) stitched a partnership of 123 to stabilise the Lankan innings.

Once Sangakkara departed, Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne (51) kept the momentum going for the Islanders. The duo added 46 runs for the fourth wicket.

James Pattinson did the major damage early on for the Australians bagging three top order wickets.

Just when Sri Lanka looked set for a big score, Christian bagged a hat-trick to help Australia rally back into the match.

The Australian all-rounder struck to dismiss Thisara Perera, Sachithra Senanayake and Nuwan Kulasekara to complete his first hat-trick in the ODIs.

Thirimanne continued to hold fort for the Lankans but threw his wicket after a gritty half-century.

Australian pacers Pattinson and bagged four wickets, while Christian took five wickets.
