A maiden century innings by Joe Root (104) and his 124-run partnership with fellow Yorkshire player Jonny Bairstow (64) helped England reach a total of 337 for the loss of seven wickets at stumps on Day Two of the second Test against New Zealand at Leeds.

Root who has been in sublime form even in the county season showed his class with the bat on his home turf. The spectators who had expected their local boys to perform weren’t disappointed as Bairstow too stroked a fluent half-century to take England to a decent total.
