Graeme Smith is often reputed as one of the most courageous captain in World cricket. Of the 117 Test matches he featured in, he was captain in 109 of those. He believed in leading from the front and most truly embodied the principle of courage when he batted with a broken hand against a dangerous Australian attack.

Earlier, in the match his left arm was hit by a fast Mitchell Johnson delivery and he had to retire hurt. However, with nine wickets down in the fourth innings and about 6 overs to play out, Smith made the decision to walk back out in the middle. He fought hard with just one working arm and brought his team within 10 balls of saving the match before Johnson got the better of a handicapped Smith.
