That India’s limited-overs skipper MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina are amongst the best athletes in world cricket is an established fact. Both — especially Dhoni — are terrific runners between the wicket and have tremendous ability to convert singles into doubles. In fact, the two can even take a single (even double) where there isn’t one.  This is not an overstatement; check the video below to believe.

The video is from an India-England One-Day International (ODI) from the 2006 ODI series played between the two teams in India. In one of the match, when the two were at the crease, they did the impossible by completing two runs when there wasn’t a single to be taken. It happened on a James Anderson delivery, which was going down the leg stump. Dhoni went with a wild slog at it but missed it completely, with the ball hitting his pads and racing towards boundary down the leg side.

England wicketkeeper Geraint Jones made a valiant dive and saved a certain boundary. He threw the ball back at stumps, which broke them, and kept lying on the ground. Sensing a run here, Dhoni and Raina ran hard and completed the single. Jones still didn’t get up, as it mustn’t have struck him that they would go for the second. But Dhoni’s electric-heels set off for the second run and before Jones could reach to the stumps and pull them out of the ground, he was back into the crease. Watch the video for Dhoni’s athleticism and England players’ embarrassment.
