The five-match One-Day International (ODI) series between South Africa and England ended in quite a dramatic way. First two matches went in England’s favour and it looked as if they would seal the series quite easily but South Africa made a stunning comeback and won rest of the three matches. Like every other match, this one too broke and set several records and Abhishek Kumar looks at 10 statistical highlights from this match. 1. With 261 runs in this series, Joe Root has now third most runs in a bilateral series against South Africa in their backyard on a losing cause and second from England. The other two are Kevin Pietersen from England with 324 runs in 2004-05 series and Roger Twose from New Zealand with 286 runs in 2000-01 series.
2. Alex Hales scored his first century of the series but ended up on a losing side. He scored 112 runs, which is now the third highest runs scored by any English player against South Africa at their backyard.
3. Throughout the series, Hales scored five consecutive fifty plus score, which is the fifth instance by any England batsman. The other four to get it are Geoffrey Boycott, Graham Gooch, Alec Stewart and Jonathan Trott.
4. Hales also becomes the third batsman to score fifty plus score in all five games of a series. The other two are Yasir Hameed and Kane Williamson.
5. Hales scored 383 runs in the series, which is the third most scored by any batsman in a bilateral ODI series in South Africa and second most by any English player.
6. Hales scored 43 boundaries in the series, which is the second most boundaries in a bilateral ODI series in South Africa. Even Shivanarine Chanderpaul in the past has hit same number of fours.
7. AB de Villiers scored his 24th century of his ODI career and interestingly all his hundreds have come at a strike-rate of over 100.
8. AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla once again put up century partnership, their fifth at home. They need only more hundred-run stand to level the record of Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis at home.
9. Overall, it was also the 11th hundred-run partnership between De Villiers and Amla and need one more century stand between them to break the record of most hundred-run partnership by any South African pair.
10. South African won the series by 3-2 and this was the fourth instance in the history of ODI when any team won the series after being down 0-2.
