This is going to be Ashish Reddy’s fourth season in IPL

In 2012, Ashish Reddy made his debut for the Hyderabad franchise and impressed all and sundry by his all-round performances. Even though he was expensive with the ball, Reddy had an impressive 2009 season. Sudatta Mukherjee spoke to Reddy about playing First-Class and in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2015 and how he is looking forward to working with Dale Steyn.

Sudatta Mukherjee (SM): This is your fourth season with Hyderabad franchise. You had a pretty good IPL 2009 season but 2013 went bad for you. Despite featuring in the squad last season, you did not get a chance in playing XI. What do you think went wrong after 2009?

Ashish Reddy (AR): I did not get an opportunity to play and there were a lot of things —team combination and all. One has to see all that. I did pretty well in 2009 when I played for Deccan Chargers (DC). Later on, I did not get an opportunity as the team was very strong.

SM: Recently you scored 104 and picked up three wickets for Hyderabad in Ranji season against Jharkhand. You have a good First-Class average and economy rate. However, T20 cricket is different. Do you think you can emulate your FC performances into IPL?

AR: Yes definitely. Given an opportunity I will put in my 100 percent and try to make my side win.

SM: What about your batting? Do you see yourself more as a bowler or an all-rounder?

AR: I am an all-rounder. Both are the same for me, both are important for me.

SM: You have some big international names playing with you in SRH— Dale Steyn, Trent Boult, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan. Have you spoken to them on your playing role or taken advice?

AR: Yes I keep talking to them. I am lucky to be among such big names. You get to learn a lot about the game.

SM: Which SRH player are you excited to work with?

AR: I really like the way Dale Steyn bowls. I have been with for past few years, since Deccan Chargers days. I have been with him all the time. I always look forward to playing with Steyn.

SM: You have Tom Moody, Kris Srikkanth and VVS Laxman as coach and mentors. How is it like to work under them?

AR: They are really nice. They are experienced cricketers and played a lot. Laxman, Tom Moody keep giving us tips, so, that it is really helpful for us while playing.

SM: How crucial do you think IPL is for youngsters? Do you think young cricketers should concentrate more on IPL or First-Class cricket?

AR: It is very crucial. If we really do well then we may get to play somewhere big, maybe for the country. It is really nice and hopefully we will do well in the IPL. First-Class and everything is important. Whatever you play is very important. If you perform well in First-Class, only then you will get a chance to play in the IPL.

SM: Will we see more of Ashish Reddy this time? Any inputs on what role you have been you have been  asked to play by SRH management?

AR: Nothing like that. Just go out and bat and get as many runs as possible. I am a lower, middle-order batsman. When I get to bat I get less number of balls to bat. Whenever I go out to bat, I try to hit. In bowling I try to contain and take wickets. That’s the whole thing.
