Australia vs New Zealand 2015-16 will indeed be one of the biggest tests for newly appointed Australian skipper Steven Smith, who will look to script his own history. Smith, who has succeeded Michael Clarke as Australia captain this summer, will look to rebuild and pick up the team to No. 2 spot in ICC Test ranking as soon as possible. Smith has the chance to mould the team in his own manner and not pick up from where Clarke left. In his small but impactful 33-Test career, Smith has 3,095 runs at an average of 56.27, scoring 11 hundreds and 12 fifties. Smith’s record as Captain in the caretaker role has not been that good in Tests. Out of 3 Tests, Smith has won 1 and drawn 2, all against India in 2014-15. LIVE SCORECARD: Australia vs New Zealand 2015, 1st Test at Brisbane

Smith, 26, is bound to be compared to Steve Waugh in terms how will he rebuild and nurture the team. Waugh took captaincy from Mark Taylor, who retired in 1999. The year 2000 was a memorable year as the Australians were on a 16-Test unbeaten streak before bowing down to India in 2000-01.

Waugh had persisted with players like Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Damien Martyn, Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee, who grew under him to become greats in their own ways; Ponting eventually replaced Waugh as Australian captain. Smith also had a chance to know the tricks of the game under Clarke which will only come good for him in the long run. Full Cricket Scorecard: Australia vs New Zealand 1st Test at Brisbane, Day 1

This phenomenon of rebuilding Australian teams from scratch is not new, with Allan Border, Waugh and Clarke achieving huge success with their teams. The road for Smith has been paved; it is for him to adjust and find talent to support and give a pedestal to grow. In order to keep support of his team he also needs to continuously perform with the bat. Many players have failed to live up to the expectations of both captaincy and as a player (search Sachin Tendulkar record as captain).

Smith has a big task in front of him facing the New Zealand team lead by Brendon McCullum, who is more experienced in captaincy and can absorb the pressure better. After being vice-captain of the losing Ashes team this summer, it is imperative for Smith to undo the memories and start from a blank slate. With David Warner as vice-captain and Mitchell Johnson in the team he is never short on advice. Photo Gallery:  Australia vs New Zealand 1st Test at Brisbane

Smith will want to emulate Border, but not his record as the only Australian captain to lose a Test series against the visiting New Zealand team, in 1985-86. He will indeed be judged on way he performs as captain and a player in the on-going Trans-Tasman series 2015-16. If he wins the series his name will be engraved in long list of captains to create a new chapter in Australian Cricket.
