Bangladesh edged out Zimbabwe by 21 runs in the fourth One-Day International (ODI) to take to 4-0 lead in the five-match series. Zimbabwe came close to winning the match on many occasions but in the end Bangladesh managed to pull it off by a margin of 21 runs. Varun Arora looks at the highlights of the exciting encounter.

Tribute to Phillip Hughes: Both Bangladesh and Zimbabwe teams observed one minute’s silence before the start of the play in the memory of Phil Hughes who passed away on Thursday after being hit by a bouncer on his head. All the players, match officials lined up and and prayed for the soul of the Australian cricketer.

Zimbabwe picks four early wicket wickets: Bangladesh were reduced to 32 for four after Zimbabwe struck in the early overs. Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Anamul Haque and Shakib Al Hasan were sent packing by the Zimbabwe bowlers early in the innings. Neville Madziva and Solomon Mire did the early damage as they picked up two wickets each. Madziva who made his fifth ODI appearance for Zimbabwe returned with his best figure of three for 60.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah’s five-wicket partnership: Zimbabwe had sealed the early advantage but Bangladesh pegged back into the game with Rahim and Mahmudullah’s 134-run stand for the fifth wicket. Both the batsmen completed their half-centuries and steered the Bangladesh innings to a score past 250. Mahmudullah remained unbeaten on 82.

Mashrafe Mortaza’s 25 ball 39: Mashrafe Mortaza came out to bat when Bangladesh were reduced to 177 for seven. It looked unlikely for them to reach a score past 250 but then the captain came up with a sweet cameo. Mortaza hit two sixes and four boundaries in his innings. He hit Madziva for a boundary and a six in the 45th and 47th over before getting out to him in the penultimate over of the innings.

Jubair Hossain’s first ODI wicket: Jubair Hossain who was phenomenal in Tests was drafted in the Bangladesh team for the fourth ODI. His first wicket was of Timycen Maruma who was dismissed in the 17th over the match. Maruma failed to pick up the wrong one from Hossain and the ball shattered the stumps. Hossain returned with figures of two for 42 in the six overs he bowled.

Brendan Taylor and Solomon Mire’s fourth-wicket partnership:  Solomon Mire and Brendan Taylor added 106 runs for the fourth-wicket which steadied the Zimbabwe innings after the loss of three early wickets. Mire went on to score his second half-century in the ODIs. But, both Mire and Taylor were dismissed in two consecutive overs which promoted Bangladesh back in the match.
