ICC cricket World Cup 2015 is to kick off in a few hours. Barring a couple of squads, most have some players who have the experience of playing in the earlier World Cups. Bharath Seervi provides details regarding their World Cup experiences.
Each of the 14 teams in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 has a 15-men squad for the tournament. Among the 210 players of the 14 teams, there are 83 who have played in World Cups in the past while the remaining 127 will be appearing in this big stage for the first time.
The names make some curious reading. While there are men like Mahela Jayawardene and Shahid Afridi who have already played four World Cups each, there have been the likes of Mashrafe Mortaza, Marlon Samuels and Kyle Mills, who, despite having played in 2003, are to play only their third World Cups. – Defending champions India has only four players with World Cup experience. The count is the lowest among the Test-playing nations.
– Afghanistan is appearing in World Cups for the first time.
– No player from UAE has played in the World Cup 1996 which was the only time they qualified for World Cups.
– Scotland has only one player — Majid Haq — who appeared for them in ICC World Cup 2007.
– West Indies has 12 players in their 15-member squad with experience of playing in previous World Cups.
– Zimbabwe has five players who have played two or more World Cups — the most among all teams appearing in this World Cup.
