It was something that Adelaide had not seen before but India and Pakistan fans weren’t alien to the atmosphere. In the high-voltage clash between the neighbours in their opening match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, history repeated itself, as India beat Pakistan by 76 runs. In a placid track, MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat. India started cautiously but lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma early on. It was the partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli, which put India on the course for a big total. The duo added 129, before Dhawan was run out for 74.
Kohli went on to score 107, becoming the first Indian to smash a hundred against Pakistan in World Cup. Kohli added 110 runs with Suresh Raina, who scored a quick 76 from 56 balls. India looked on course for a massive total but Sohail Khan’s fifer halted their progress, as they managed exactly 300.
Indian bowlers bowled a good line and didn’t give too many easy runs. They partnered well and picked up wickets at regular intervals and apart from Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq, none of the Pakistani batsmen got going. They were bowled out for 224 and the most anticipated and watched match was clinched by India. History repeated with India now winning all six of their World Cup ties against arch-rivals Pakistan.
Brief scores:
India 300 for 7 in 50 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 73, Virat Kohli 107, Suresh Raina 74; Sohail Khan 5-55) bt Pakistan 224 in 47 overs (Ahmed Shehzad 47, Misbah-ul-Haq 76; Mohammed Shami 4-35) by 76 runs
