India won the World Cup for the first time in 1983. Facing West Indies in the Prudential World Cup final, India were put to bat first. The batsmen could not put up a challenging target. Kris Srikkanth top scored for India with 38. West Indies needed 184 to win.

 

However, India showed good fight. Riding on Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath’s bowling performances; India bowled West Indies out for 140, with eight overs left. Amarnath was awarded the man-of-the-match for his all-round performance. Kapil Dev led the side to an admirable win.
