51 runs needed for Virat Kohli to become the top run-getter from India in a season. Kohli has scored 1,219 runs in 2016-17. Kohli is currently behind Rahul Dravid (1,241 in 2003-04) and Gautam Gambhir (1,269 in 2008-09). Moreover, if Kohli scores 69, then he will stand at the 2nd spot in the list of top run-getters in a season after Ricky Ponting (1,483 in 2005-06); he will go past Matthew Hayden’s tally of 1,287 runs in 2005-06.
1 win here will make Australia the first visiting team since England in 1976-77 to win first the 2 Tests of a series of 4 or more Tests. The last team to do it in any series was South Africa, who had won the 1999-00 series 2-0.
112 runs needed for Steve Smith to complete 5,000 runs in Tests. He will become the 20th Australian to reach the landmark. Moreover, by doing so, he will also stand at 6th spot in the list of most runs by Australian batsman against India. Smith will go past Bob Simpson’s tally of 1,125 runs against India.
5 times Umesh Yadav has dismissed David Warner and Shaun Marsh each in Tests. They remain Umesh’s most frequent victims.
148 runs needed by Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay to become the first Indian pair to add 1,000 runs in a season. They will also go past the 961-run record set by Gambhir and Dravid in 2008-09.
1 more century stand between Pujara and Vijay will take them to the 2nd spot for most hundreds by a pair in a season. They are currently at joint-2nd spot with 5, with David Boon and Mark Waugh in 1993 and Hayden and Justin Langer in 2001-02. The record is of 7, set by Hayden and Ponting in 2005-06. Overall, it will be their 9th hundred-run partnership between them.
1 more century for Smith will make him stand at 2nd spot in the list of most centuries by captains against India. At 4, he is currently at par with Don Bradman, Michael Clarke and Alastair Cook. The record is of 7 by Clive Lloyd.
71 needed for Ravindra Jadeja to complete 1,000 runs in Tests. He will become the 10th Indian to the 1,000-run-100-wicket double after Vinoo Mankad, Kapil, Ravi Shastri, Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Harbhajan, Zaheer, Irfan Pathan and Ashwin. Overall, Jadeja will become the 63rd cricketer to achieve this double.
56 Tests missed by Abhinav Mukund since he last played for India. His played his last Test in 2011 against England. If Mukund gets to play he will become the 2nd Indian cricketer to miss more than 50 Tests, after Parthiv Patel (83).

18 runs needed for Pujara to become the 2nd-highest run-getter as No. 3 batsman in a home season. Pujara has scored 948 runs in 2016-17. Another 18 will take him past Ponting (965 in 2003-04) and Mohinder Amarnath (965 in 1982-83), and put him after only Dravid (1,241 in 2003-04). Pujara has already scored 3 hundreds in this season at No. 3. This is the second time in his career that he made 3 centuries in a season, after 2012-13. Dravid has achieved this feat 5 times in his career. Mohinder is the only Indian with 4 hundreds in a season at No. 3, in 1982-83.
4 dismissals needed for Wriddhiman Saha to complete 50 dismissals as wicketkeeper. He will become the 9th Indian wicketkeeper to reach this landmark.
68 wickets for Ashwin in 2016-17, 2nd-most wickets by a bowler in a season. Ashwin is only behind Dale Steyn’s record of 78 wickets in 2007-08. Moreover, Ashwin is also now the only player to take 65 wickets and score 400 runs in a season.
4 more wickets for Nathan Lyon and he will become the highest wicket-taker from Australia against India. Lyon is currently joint-4th with Mitchell Johnson (50), but the he is extremely close to the top three — Brett Lee (53), Richie Benaud (52) and Glenn McGrath (51).
5 more wickets needed for Ishant Sharma to complete 50 wickets against Australia. He will become the 9th Indian bowler to do so.
9 centuries for Vijay in Tests, all of which have come as an opener. Of Indian openers, only Sunil Gavaskar (33) and Virender Sehwag (22) have more Test hundreds, while Gambhir also has 9. One more hundred will put Vijay at joint-3rd.
119 runs needed for KL Rahul to complete 1,000 runs in Tests. He will become the 64th Indian to reach this milestone.
82 runs needed for Kohli to become the 3rd-highest run-getter as an Indian captain against Australia. With 462 runs, Kohli is currently behind Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (829), MS Dhoni (813), Gavaskar (543) and Mohammad Azharuddin (503).
A win for either team will in the first Test not change their place in ICC Test rankings. India will remain No. 1 and Australia No. 2 irrespective of the result.
