As India and South Africa gear up for a five-match One-Day International (ODI) series, Pramod Ananth digs up some statistics that might help throw some light on the performance of both teams on Indian soil.

South Africa certainly have the psychological advantage going into the series having won the T20 International (T20I) series. But the ODI series is a completely different ball game and India as expected hold the edge over South Africa at home. Out of the 23 matches the sides have played in India, the hosts have won 13 while the Proteas have triumphed in the other 10. South Africa are by no means been pushovers, but they will get an opportunity to improve their record once the series gets underway. However it is South Africa who have a healthy lead over Indian when it comes to overall wins. India have only notched up 26 wins out of 72 ODI matches against South Africa, with the Proteas winning 42. MS Dhoni’s men will take note of this and look to improve their overall record as well.

India have a superior record when it comes to the bilateral series at home as well, winning 10 out of the 16 matches played. South Africa on the other hand have won only six. Interestingly, South Africa were the only team to beat India in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. India’s only win in four attempts against South Africa in World Cups came in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, when India thrashed South Africa by 130 runs. The series is set to be an exciting one and one which India will look to win after their debacle in the T20I series ahead of this. While India have the statistical advantage, South Africa have the momentum. A series win for South Africa will be demoralising for India, going into the Test series after this.
