Delhi Daredevils (DD) are currently languishing at the bottom of the points table in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018. It may not be evident from the ubiquitously smiling Kiran Grandhi, but things are far from nice for them. A mid-season resignation (and subsequent axing) of Gautam Gambhir did not help their cause. The failure is somewhat of a surprise: Rishabh Pant holds the Orange Cap, Shreyas Iyer is eighth on the tally of highest run-getters, and at one point Trent Boult held the Purple Cap. But then, cricket is a team sport…
However, despite standing last on the table, DD are not out of contention of a spot in the Playoffs. But first, let us have a look at the points table, as they stand after the clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the only team to have qualified till date, and DD.

From here, if DD win all 3 matches (winning 3 on the trot is not very rare), they will shoot to 12 points. As things stand now, only three teams have 12 points or more. But then, other sides will play as well, which means that 12 will not be a safe spot. There are quite a few permutations that can make the qualification possible for Delhi. We will see one of them here.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) will join SRH in the Playoffs as per the above scenario. DD will be tied with Rajasthan Royals (RR) at fourth spot. All DD need to do is to make sure their net run rate remains above RR’s. Just for information, DD’s current net run rate (-0.447) is superior to RR’s -0.552.
