Inspired by Day-Night Test match, PM Modi mulls Day-Night Parliament sessions
The concept of day-night Test match has also spawned an idea in the mind of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is now mulling a first-of-its-kind “Day-Night Parliament” for the country.

The cricketing world’s first ever day-night Test match between Australia and New Zealand ended up in a thrilling win for the former, thus establishing itself as a format that’s here to stay. The concept has also spawned an idea in the mind of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is now mulling a first-of-its-kind “Day-Night Parliament” for the country.
“People often complain that parliamentary sessions are monotonous, boring and are often adjourned within minutes. So in order to give this thing a whole new outlook, I was thinking – why not make it a day-night affair? People were initially so skeptical about day-night Test matches and whether they would work. But look at the result! Similarly, I’m very confident that our day-night parliamentary sessions will be very exciting,” PM Modi told the The UnReal Times.
“Besides, I’m so jet-lagged these days, my concentration and focus is best at these odd hours, as opposed to the daytime hours of the Indian timezone,” he added.
According to sources, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has already been given a pink hammer to use.
The PM’s suggestion has been met with diverse reactions. Bollywood actors Anupam Kher and Raveena Tandon waxed eloquent about the decision. “It is in darkness that light shines brightest! 🙂 Jai Ho :)” Kher tweeted.
On the other hand, the usual suspects lambasted the PM for what they termed an utterly ridiculous idea. “It’s not enough that this bloody chaiwala is already leading this nation into darkness, he now wants to take the Parliament too through the same path!” Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar thundered.
Within moments, BJP MP Yogi Adityanath suggested that those who do not want the day-night parliament can go to Pakistan. The decision drew sharp reactions from across the border as well. “This guy is so fond of burning stuff. First it was Gujarat and now it is the midnight oil!” General Pervez Musharraf said, drawing rapturous applause from Mani Shankar Aiyar and ORF chief Sudheendra Kulkarni.
Inevitably, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal too joined the party. “God: Let there be light. Modi: Let there be darkness. Interesting naaaa?” tweeted the Aam Aadmi Party chief.
Political analysts see the move as one aimed to reduce opposition to the GST, by inducing sleep in the members of the opposition, thanks to odd timings. Former PM Deve Gowda, however, vehemently disagreed with this notion. “Nonsense! Day or night, how does it matter ree? Those who want to sleep will….zzzzz!” the JD(S) chief dozed off.
