Nitish Rana continued his stellar performance, scoring 45 off 36 balls to gift Mumbai Indians (MI) their consecutive win in the 10th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), in 2017, while Parthiv Patel and Krunal Pandya also rose to the challenge. At Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, MI displayed a clinical performance to edge past reigning champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 4 wickets. Jasprit Bumrah was awarded Man of the Match for his 3 for 24. Bumrah restricted SRH to 158 after David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan added 81 runs for the opening stand in Rohit Sharma and Lasith Malinga’s 100th appearances for MI. Harbhajan brings experience into play: It was Harbhajan Singh’s double-strike that brought MI back in the game. When Warner was going all guns blazing on 49, Harbhajan bowled a quicker delivery and prevented the opposition captain from executing a perfect switch-hit. He later went to dismiss Deepak Hooda in his last over and ended with 2 for 23.
Warner does not change ends: The usual norm in cricket is that the batsmen does not change ends after the end of over. Warner, maybe unknowingly, disregarded the rule. He hit a four off the last ball of sixth over. As the fielders went in pursuit of the ball, Dhawan and Warner changed ends in pursuit of a single in case the ball failed to reach the boundary. However, they did not return to their respective ends. As a result, Warner played the first ball of the next over as well. The umpires failed to spot the incident.
Parthiv scores but no one notices: As is often the case with Parthiv, his excellent start went unnoticed. He laid a solid foundation, but a middle-order batsman waltzes the team to victory, overshadowing the little man. Parthiv scored 39 off 24 with 5 boundaries off Ashish Nehra.
Mustafizur has a forgettable opening: In the last edition he had taken 17 wickets at 24.7. Many were waiting for Mustafizur to play in this year’s IPL. However, in his first outing, he gave away as many as 34 runs in 2.4 overs. The first ball was an indication of what was in store for Mustafizur: the bouncer was on target, but Rana half-ducked, half-guided it over the ropes at fine-leg.
Southpaws’ day out: The leading run-scorers from each team were left-handed — Warner (49) and Dhawan (48) for SRH and Rana (45), Parthiv (39), and Krunal Pandya (37) for MI.
Bhuvi and Rashid shine but others fail: Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s figures read better than Man of the Match Bumrah’s. Both took as many wickets but Bhuvneshwar conceded 3 runs fewer. Rashid, on the other hand, continued his good form, taking 1 for 19. He got the better of Rohit with his much talked-about wrong ’un. However, Nehra and Mustafizur leaked 80 runs off 6.4 overs between them.
