New Zealand’s series win against Pakistan after 31 years, visitor’s dramatic collapse and other compelling statistical highlights from 2nd Test at Hamilton

The second Test between New Zealand and Pakistan at Seddon Park, Hamilton ended in a dramatic fashion. Set 369 to win, Pakistan started solid at 131 for no loss. But after the fall of first wicket, a dramatic collapse ensued. New Zealand bowlers claimed 9 wickets in the final session to beat Pakistan by 130 runs. With this win, New Zealand registered their first Test series victory over Pakistan since 1985. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson called it ‘one of the most remarkable Test finishes’ he had featured in. 781 runs for Ross Taylor at Seddon Park, Hamilton: This is the second-most runs by a New Zealander at this venue after Stephen Fleming (789 runs). The record for most runs at a single venue by a Kiwi is held by Martin Crowe, having amassed1,123 runs at Basin Reserve, Wellington. Also, this was his 4th Test ton at Seddon Park, which is the second-most by any New Zealand player at a venue. Crowe has 5 hundreds at Wellington. Taylor went past the New Zealand record of Glenn Turner and John Wright’s tally of second most hundreds (3 centuries) at a single venue.

16th Test ton for Taylor: He is only one hundred away from levelling with Crowe in terms of most Test tons by a New Zealander. Also, this was his 41st fiftyplus score in Test and in New Zealand charts, he is now only behind Fleming (55) and Brendon McCullum  (43).

Pakistan lost their 10 wickets for less than 100 runs after the opening stand for more than 100. This is the third such instance where Pakistan have lost all 10 wickets for less than 100. Previous two such instances for Pakistan came in 1995 against New Zealand at Christchurch and in 1962 against England at Dhaka.

Pakistan lost their last three wickets in the final innings for a run. This is the third time they have done that. Their lowest of losing last three wickets for no run was against England at Nottingham in 1967. Previous two instances of Pakistan losing their last three wickets for a run came against West Indies at Lahore in 1959 and against South Africa at Cape Town in 2003.

This is the first series win for New Zealand over Pakistan since 1985. Overall, this is New Zealand’s third Test series win against Pakistan after 1969 and 1985.

360 balls faced by Sami Aslam and Azhar Ali for 1st wicket partnership is the second most number balls faced by any Pakistani opening pair in a Test innings. Also, this is the most number of balls faced by Pakistan openers in third or fourth innings of a Test. The record for most balls faced by Pakistani opening pair is also held by Aslam and Azhar for 407 balls against West Indies earlier this year.

BJ Watling became fourth New Zealand batsman to remain unbeaten at 49 in a Test innings after Glenn Turner in 1973, Warren Lees in 1976 and Jeremy Coney in 1980. Overall, Watling became 31st player, 10th in this century and fourth player against Pakistan. Last player to remain not out at 49 before thiswas Virat Kohli, during the first Test against England at Rajkot in 2016.

Babar Azam became 10th Pakistani batsman to remain not out in 90s in a Test innings and first since 2010. Previous batsman from Pakistan to remain unbeaten in 90s was Azhar, during the third Test against England in 2010. Overall, Azam became 71st player, 18th in this century and fifth player against New Zealand.

Pakistan lost their first three wickets for 12 runs in the first innings. Their joint-second lowest against New Zealand. Previous instance of Pakistan losing top three wickets for 12 runs came in 1993 and lowest of 10 runs for three wickets came in 1965.

Mohammad Rizwan became 9th Pakistani batsman to be dismissed on golden duck on Test debut. Overall, he became 99th batsman to get this unwanted record and 9th against New Zealand. Previous Pakistani batsman to be dismissed on golden duck on debut was Zulqarnain Haider against England at Birmingham in 2010.

New Zealand won the match against Pakistan by 138 runs: This is their biggest Test win over Pakistan in terms of runs and fourth biggest at home.

41 wickets for Neil Wagner in 2016: He became 5th Kiwi bowler to take 40 or more wickets in a calendar year after Trent Boult (46 wickets in 2013), Daniel Vettori (54 wickets in 2008), Chris Cairns (47 wickets in 1999) and Richard Hadlee (64 wickets in 1985).
