Poll: Mitchell Starc, Mustafizur Rahman, Trent Boult or Mohammad Amir — who is the best left arm pacer currently?

The conditions at Galle were not easy for pacers but Mitchell Starc produced a fine spell of 5 for 44 for Australia to restrict the hosts to 281. Kushal Mendis was again looking in a brilliant touch but Starc produced a gem to send back Mendis for 86. Having lost the first Test, Australia face a huge task to come back strong against a side they have not lost a single series yet. The Starc spell leaves them in a strong position after Day One.

Starc is among the leading bowlers in world cricket, which recently has seen an influx of quality left-arm pacers. Starc uses his height to advantage. He is fast, can swing the ball, possesses a lethal yorker and can bounce out batsmen. He is only 26 and mind you, he was the Player of the Tournament in the World Cup 2015.

New Zealand’s Trent Boult is another top left-arm pacer. He may not be as fast as Starc but is brilliant with swing. If conditions suit him, he is unplayable. The 27-year-old Tauranga lad has created a massive reputation for himself and by the time he finishes, he will surely find a spot in New Zealand’s all-time XI. The other big name in the league of young quality left-armers is Mohammad Amir. The Pakistani speedster would have topped many charts had he played consistently since 2010. However, the match-fixing controversy took away six good cricketing years from his career. Let bygones be bygones, Amir has made a strong comeback in international cricket. He is just 24 and leading the Pakistani bowling attack.

However, there is an interesting addition to this illustrious list. Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman has been bagging all the headlines ever since he broke into the national side and claimed back-to-back fifers in his first two ODIs against India. So far, he has excelled in every format and his brilliant show was one of the reasons for Bangladesh’s resurgence and of course, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) maiden IPL win.

Only 20, Mustafizur’s off-cutters are a mystery that top batters are still in process of decoding. His intelligence at this tender age sets him apart.

It is very difficult to pick one among this bunch and label him the best. We leave it to you. Check the stats and let us know who do you think is the best left-arm pacer from this bunch?
