Poll: Should India play the ICC World T20 under Virat Kohli’s leadership?

The Indian team overcame AB de Villiers and South Africa on Monday to finish the four-match Test series with a 3-0 scoreline. The same team had beaten Sri Lanka 2-1 at their home and could have thrashed Bangladesh too had it not been a washout at Fatullah. The team showed a lot of character in the losses Down Under as well. This is the dawn of a new era for the Indian Test team. Read: Twitter reactions: India thrash South Africa by 337 runs in Delhi; register 3-0 series win

Under the leadership of Virat Kohli, the team has looked a completely different outfit. It is exuding aggression and hunger to win in every match that is being played. This is unlike the previous teams that played defensive cricket overseas and got blanked.

MS Dhoni, under whom India won the inaugural ICC World T20 in 2007 and the Cricket World Cup in 2011, hasn’t led the Test team with the same distinction. It is under him that India were whitewashed in England and Australia in 2011. With all the seniors at his disposal, he could do little but watch the team lose haplessly. His leadership in the limited-overs post-World Cup too has been uninspiring, with India losing first against Bangladesh and then the Proteas at home (both in the T20Is and the ODIs).

On the contrary, Kohli has transformed a bunch of youngsters into a unit that looks lethal. He has instilled that self-confidence within the group that they can indeed become the world-beaters. These are still early days, but the signs have been promising. With the ICC World T20 2016 just around the corner, it won’t be a bad idea if Kohli is handed over the reins for the shorter formats too. The fact that the tournament will be played in India will only be an advantage.
