In the previous decade, we saw the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara, etc. ruling the batting charts. Their departure made us feel that cricket will be deprived of quality batsmanship but then emerged a few young batsmen, who in every possibility will re-write many batting records.
Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson are four players in the similar age, brilliant batsmen and possess sound leadership skills. They have already begun competing for the title of batting supremacy. At the moment, when it comes to limited-overs cricket, Kohli cannot be touched. He is by far the best, however, the competition narrows down in Test cricket, a format that truly tests your skills. Kohli is still behind in the race as the other three boast of a superior Test record; however, the Indian Test skipper is in no mood to lag behind. In his last Test, he scored his maiden Test double ton and the kind of form he has exhibited so far this year, it seems a matter of time before he breaks into the top 5 in the ICC rankings. If you look at the below numbers, there isn’t a huge difference.
While Kohli will look to continue his dominance in West Indies, Williamson has an opportunity to better his record against the listless Zimbabweans, Smith will have to prove his mettle if Australia have to win their ongoing Test in Sri Lanka and England will hope Root’s brilliancy continues in the ongoing Pakistan series.
