Kedar Jadhav scored his fifth century of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 and has also reached 1,000 runs in the season so far. Bharath Seervi looks at this feat and others who achieved it in the past.
Maharashtra’s middle order batsman Kedar Jadhav brought up his fifth century of the Ranji Trophy season 2013-14 in the quarter-final encounter against Mumbai. His quickfire 120 off only 144 balls ensured that Maharashtra successfully chase down a target of 252. It was an innings that included 14 fours and three sixes.
Jadhav also completed 1,000 runs in this season when he reached 114 during his whirlwind knock. He became the first batsman to reach that landmark in this season. It was his 14th outing in nine matches so far. He averages 94.00, but his strike-rate of 80.40 also reflects how dominant he has been.

The right-hander made a sensational start to this season. In the first match, he scored 57 and 48 not out against Tripura and Maharashtra won by nine wickets. In the next three matches, he scored 204, 106 and 25 not out, and 173. He had aggregated 613 runs in the first four matches of the season. Then there was a bit of a lull as he recorded scores of 41, 9 and 34, and four in next three games. But, he was back in business when it mattered the most and Mumbai bore the brunt of his willow in the quarter-final.
Jadhav scored his runs at a very good strike rate of 80.40 — which is the highest among those who have scored more than 700 runs this season. He has hit the most number of fours in the season — 135 along with 15 sixes. He got a good support from his team mate Harshad Khadiwale, who has aggregated 944 runs at 67.42 in 16 innings so far.

Only one player scored more than Jadhav’s five centuries in a Ranji Trophy season and that is VVS Laxman — who scored eight tons in 1999-2000. There are 15 others who have managed to score five centuries in a Ranji Trophy season. The first player to score five tons in a Ranji season was Rusi Modi in 1944-45. Interestingly, Modi had played only five matches that season, yet he scored 1,008 runs and five centuries.

Jadhav — 1,000 runs
Jadhav became only the 13th player to complete 1,000 runs in a Ranji season. Only 2 batsmen completed 1,000 runs in a Ranji Trophy season before 1995. They were Rusi Modi in 1944-45 and WV Raman in 1988-89. All the others have scored in the last two decades.
Jadhav’s 1,034 runs is currently joint-eighth in the list of the most runs in a Ranji Trophy season. His team, Maharashtra, will play the semi-final and have the chance to play the final as well. Hence one big knock can take him to fourth spot. The men leading the list are: Laxman (1,415), R Vijay Bharadwaj (1,280) and Jaffer (1,260)
