Sachin Tendulkar, on February 24, 2010, scored the first ever double century in the history of men’s One-Day Internationals (ODIs). The venue was the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh and the opposition was South Africa. He managed to reach the historic landmark off 147 balls in the final over the Indian inning. Before him, Belinda Clark of Australia scored 229 not out off 155 deliveries in a women’s ODIs against Denmark at Mumbai in 1997.

Tendulkar had a brisk start as he reached his half century off just 37 balls which included nine fours. The second 50 runs came quite slowly, still he completed his century off 90 balls. The next two 50 runs were scored in 28 and 29 balls respectively and he reached the milestone in 50th over.

Tendulkar’s runs came at an almost even pace against all bowlers. He scored most runs, 46 off 24, against Wayne Parnell at a strike-rate of 191.66. He managed to score at least 20 runs against each of the six bowlers South Africa used.

In August 2009, Zimbabwean Charles Coventry equalled Saeed Anwar’s 194 by scoring 194 not out against Bangladesh.
Apart from becoming the first to score a double century in ODIs, below is the list of some more records achieved by Tendulkar in the inning:
# Tendulkar overcame the record of scoring most number of fours (25) in an ODI inning. Previous record was of 22 fours by Saeed Anwar in his 194 against India in 1997.
# Tendulkar scored his fifth 150-plus score in ODIs to become the player with most number of 150-plus score in ODIs which was previously equalled with Sanath Jayasuriya (4).
# Tendulkar overcame Ricky Ponting’s 164 as the highest individual score against South Africa in ODIs.
After Tendulkar’s double century, there have been two more double centuries in ODIs. Both have been scored by Indians — Virender Sehwag (219 against West Indies in 2011) and Rohit Sharma (209 against Australia in 2013).
