Year-ender 2016: David Warner’s domination, Virat Kohli’s Bradmanesque run, and other batting statistics from ODIs

Steven Smith, with 1,154 runs at 50.17, was the only captain to go past the 1,000-run mark.

Top run-getters in 2016: David Warner (1,388), Steven Smith (1,154), Quinton de Kock (857) and George Bailey (808).

Warner’s 1,388 runs in this year stand at the 14th position for most runs by a batsman in a calendar year.

Right-handed batsmen have scored 29,972 runs in 2016, the second-lowest in this century, after 25,478 (2012). On the other hand, left-handed batsmen got 14,115 runs, the third-lowest in this century, after 14,027 (2005) and 11,612 (2012).

Most runs as captain: Smith, with 1,154 runs at 50.17, was the only captain to go past the 1,000-run mark. Nobody else even reached 600. Smith’s 1,154 is also the joint 12th-highest by a skipper in a calendar year.

Fastest fifty: Aaron Finch hit the fastest fifty, in 18 balls, against Sri Lanka at Dambulla. Finch’s 18-ball fifty is the joint-fastest by an Australian batsman along with Simon O’Donnell and Glenn Maxwell.

Fastest hundred: Sharjeel Khan hit the fastest hundred, in 61 balls, against Ireland at Dublin. Sharjeel’s 61-ball hundred is the 4th-fastest by a Pakistani; the top three slots all belong to Shahid Afridi.

Most runs scored against a single opposition: 496 runs by Warner against South Africa, followed by Rohit Sharma (441 against Australia).

Most runs in a series: Rohit’s 441 against Australia, which is also the 2nd-most by an Indian and highest by an Indian in a bilateral ODI series overseas. The record for highest run-scorer in a bilateral series from India is also held by Rohit, who scored 491 against Australia in 2013-14.

Most runs on a single ground: Ed Joyce leads this list with scoring 339 runs at Civil Service Cricket Club, Stormont, Belfast against Afghanistan in 4 ODIs. It includes two centuries and a half-century.

Top scores in 2016: Quinton de Kock’s 178 was the highest score this year. De Kock was followed by Warner (173), Rohit (171*), Alex Hales (171), Smith (164) and Jason Roy (162). There have been a total of ten scores in excess of 150, the joint-most in a calendar year. The previous instance came in 2015.

Note: Smith’s 164 is the only 150-plus score by a captain. Smith’s 164 is also the joint-highest ODI score by an Australian captain (with Ricky Ponting) and joint 7th-highest overall.

In fact, de Kock now holds the top spot for most runs by a South African in a calendar year at home. He went past AB de Villiers’s 2013 record of 695 runs.

Most not outs in 2016: Mitchell Santner leads the way with 7. A total of 298 instances of batsmen remaining unbeaten happened this year, the second-lowest in this century. The lowest is of 283 in 2012.

Highest batting average (500 runs): Kohli leads this list with his excellent average of 92.37 across 739 runs, followed by Warner at (63.09; 1,388 runs). Kohli’s average of 92.37 is the highest by an Indian in a calendar year. He went past MS Dhoni’s average of 70.47 in 2009. Kohli’s average is also the 5th-best in a calendar year by any batsman after Michael Hussey (146.75; 587 runs in 2005), Viv Richards (131.50; 526 in 1979), de Villiers (107.50; 645 in 2012) and Lance Klusener (94.88; 854 in 1999).

Most balls faced: Warner faced 1,316 balls this year, the most by a batsman, followed by Smith (1,294).

Best strike-rate (500 runs): Jos Buttler has scored 573 runs at 129.9 runs every hundred balls. He is followed by de Kock (108.6) and Roy (108). Buttler’s strike rate is now the best by an English batsman. He broke his own previous best of 118.9 in 2015.

Most centuries: Warner holds this record with 7 hundreds in the year. No other batsman has even scored 4. Warner’s 7 centuries is also the joint 2nd-best in a calendar year after Sachin Tendulkar (9 in 1998), while Sourav Ganguly had got 7 in 2000.

Most fifty-plus scores: Warner leads this list too, with 11. It is also the joint-3rd most by an Australian batsman in a calendar year.

49s: As many as 5 scores of 49 were happened this year, the second-lowest for any calendar year in this century. The lowest is of 4 (2012).

99s and 149s: There has been two 99s and one 149 in 2016. The two 99s came from Rohit and Hales, while the 149 came from Smith’s bat. Smith’s 149 is the fifth 149 in history, and the second by a captain.

Most fours: Warner tops the chart again, with 148, followed by Smith (102). Warner’s 148 fours are the 3rd-most by an Australian in a calendar year after Matthew Hayden (168 in 2007) and Gilchrist (150 in 2003).

Most sixes: Martin Guptill leads the way with 28, followed by de Kock with 26. Guptill’s tally is the 3rd-best among New Zealand cricketers, behind his own best of 42 and Brendon McCullum’s 33 in 2015.

Most runs in wins: With 850 runs, Warner leads the way followed by Smith with 824.

Most runs on losing cause: Warner takes the top spot here too, with 538. This is also the most runs by an Australian in a year on losing causes. Warner also became the 1st Australian to cross the 500-mark, going past Michael Bevan’s 479 in 1996.

Consecutive 50s: Hales, Dinesh Chandimal and Joe Root all scored fifties in 5 consecutive ODIs in 2016.

Consecutive 100s: Babar Azam scored hundreds in 3 consecutive ODIs. He became the second batsman to score three consecutive hundreds in a three-match series after de Kock in 2013-14.

Most ducks: Peter Chase, Guptill, Maxwell and Tim Murtagh lead the way with 3 ducks each. They are nowhere close to the world record, which remains with Herschelle Gibbs (8 in 2002).

Golden ducks: There were 50 in all, which took the count to 1,726 in history. The record remains 85, set in 1999.

Zero not out: 7 unbeaten noughts were registered in this year, which took the count to 575. The 29 nought not outs in 2000 and 2006 remain records.
