Ajit Chandila’ life-ban in IPL Spot-fixing sets Twitter abuzz
Tainted cricketer Ajit Chandila, who played for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been handed a life-ban by a three-member disciplinary committee, which found him guilty of spot-fixing in the cash-rich league. The committee, formed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and headed by its president Shashank Manohar, also banned Mumbai cricketer Hiken Shah for 5 years.
Chandila was arrested by Delhi police for trying to spot-fix IPL matches in 2013 along with RR teammates S Sreesanth and Ankit Chavan, both of whom have been banned for life by the BCCI. Shah had approached one of his team-mates from First-Class cricket, who was also member of one of the IPL teams. The player in question had then reported it to his franchise team, which passed on the information to Anti Corruption Unit of the BCCI. “Ajit Chandila is banned for life from playing or representing cricket in any form or to be associated in any way with the activities of the Board or its affiliates,” said a BCCI release on Monday. The release further added: “Hiken Shah is held guilty of committing breach of the BCCI Anti Corruption Code. He is banned for five years from playing or representing cricket in any form or to be associated in any way with the activities of the Board or its affiliates.”
There was also no reprieve for Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf, whose name had come up in an IPL bribery case, as his hearing was scheduled for Monday. The Committee reportedly has given him a final opportunity to submit his written statement if any, and produce documents before February 9, as the hearing and the final order has been reserved for February 12, 2016 in Mumbai.
The announcement has resulted in a Twitter uproar. Here’s presenting a few top tweets:
