Glenn McGrath enjoyed having a few words with the batsmen, in order to upset their concentration. But, by his own admission, he was quite a silent bloke on the field up until his early days in Australian domestic cricket. During a recent event in Mumbai, he claimed that he “did not say a word” on the field through age group cricket and his early days in the Sheffield Shield. Then, one day, he ran into Allan Border, the then Australian captain.

Border was batting for Queensland and McGrath was bowling for New South Wales. Border had a verbal go at the silent McGrath and wanted to find out “if he could talk.” Border’s eyes then fell upon McGrath’s pants, which were about three or four inches shorter than it should have been. Border then asked him, “When is the flood coming?” McGrath maintained his silence though and managed to dismiss him later in the game.
