The world may have enjoyed the ‘Champion’ like celebration of the West Indies team after they clinched the ICC World T20 2016. However, cricket’s governing body, International Cricket Council (ICC), did not appreciate their behaviour post the world title triumph. A press release from ICC Stated, “The Board also noted that very serious consideration had been given to bringing Code of Conduct charges in respect of the behaviour of the West Indies players and emphasised that this was not acceptable conduct at ICC Events played out on a world stage in front of millions of people around the globe.”
ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar said, “The sport of cricket is proud of its unique spirit and this involves being gracious in victory as well as defeat and respectful at all times to the game, one’s opponents, the sponsors and the fans.”
That is not all. The way Player of the Match of the final, Marlon Samuels conducted himself in the press conference, received criticism from various quarters of the world. The right-hander had his legs up on the table as he addressed the press. His teammate and fellow Jamaican, Andre Russell, who is playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) too did not appreciate that but at the same time found it hilarious.
He was quoted in a report from PTI as saying, “I heard that when he went inside the post-match press conference, he did put his foot up. I do not know how to explain that but it wasn’t good. But at the same time, being a world champion for me was a very good feeling. Cricket just it continues and goes on. I did celebrate for a week and then that is it, then straight into to IPL as it all started. That was hilarious from Marlon.”
Earlier, he said, “A lot of people ask me if he (Samuels) is from Jamaica. He is from Jamaica but he is a different Jamaican. He is a confident fellow. He has won the World T20 twice, as you know after winning the World T20. He played a tremendous knock against Sri Lanka in 2012 and he had done it again in the final against England this year.”
Russell is very happy with the way his side has performed in this IPL so far. He is very pleased with how fellow West Indian Sunil Narine has fought his way back to cricket. KKR are currently placed at No.1 in the IPL Points Table.
