When the going gets tough, the tough gets going suits the best for Mumbai’s teenage cricketer Armaan Jaffer as he successfully made it to the Indian squad for the Under 19 World Cup led by Ishan Kishan. Armaan didn’t manage to sculpt a spot in the side for couple of tri-series: one against Afghanistan and Bangladesh and the recently concluded series against England and Sri Lanka.

The disappointment of not getting picked in the two tri-series triggered the 17-years old to drill hard and drew Venkatesh Prasad and co’s attention towards his ability. At times, moments like these often get the best out of a person and somewhat similar has happened with Armaan.

Armaan did exceptionally well in the Cooch Behar Trophy where he slammed three consecutive double tons and fell short on the fourth one by 26 runs. His performance was remarkable in the Vinoo Mankad and other inter-state, inter-zone tournaments.

Armaan is the only Mumbai cricketer to have been selected for the World Cup squad. Sarfraz Khan, who has played most of his cricket in Mumbai has now moved to UP and he too is a part of the squad. Armaan was quoted in a report from Mid-Day saying, “I was disappointed when I wasn’t selected for the two tri-series. I knew the players picked for the two tri-series would have a better chance to make it to the World Cup team. My coach (Mumbai U-19 coach Vinod Raghavan) told me not to think of selection and just concentrate on my batting. I tried doing that, but it wasn’t so easy.”

Regarding his exclusion from the tri-series, Armaan added saying, “It made my will to succeed stronger. I wanted to make the most of the limited chances I had. I knew if I had to make the World Cup squad, I would have to score big runs. My coach said ‘score so many runs that the selectors would be forced to look at you.”
