“Retiring out” is an entry we often see whenever Team India is touring any nation and playing those practice games. In the practice game against West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President’s XI, the top three Indian batsmen were ‘retired out’. While KL Rahul went back after 50, Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara were ‘retired out’ for 51 and 34 respectively.

An article from Deccan Chronicle quotes Cheteshwar Pujara’s father, Arvind as saying, “I don’t know what was the logic of these batsmen or the captain [Virat Kohli] but it is not against the spirit of the game.” ALSO READ: Amit Mishra revels in the ‘positive environment’ created by captain Virat Kohli

Arvind was Cheteshwar’s first coach and has been his mentor all through these years. Speaking further on the tactic, he added, “They may have their own tactics. Being a coach for my son, I never had opportunity to discuss such move with him in the past. As a coach, my job was to teach him the basics of the game. The coach of the current generation apply their own tactics in the match”. READ MORE: Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma tricked media at Sultan screening?

‘Retiring out’ is a rarity in international cricket. The first instance at the international level was recorded in the Test, which was played in 2001, when Sri Lankans, Marvan Atapattu (201) and Mahela Jayawardene (150) decided to retire out, against Bangladesh. Even the umpire Rudi Koertzen had not anticipated this.
