Christopher Timothy Tremlett, born September 2, 1981, is a former English bowler whose career was hampered by injuries. A man who thrived on pace and bounce, Tremlett had his moments in international cricket. He was very well-known for his lethal pace and bounce. 1.  Cricketing family

 

Tremlett hails from a cricketing family. His grandfather Maurice Tremlett made sporadic appearances in the English Test side, whereas his father Tim Tremlett played cricket at County level and also rendered his services as a coach to Hampshire (during Chris’ career).   

Maurice and Chris Tremlett are one of the few grandfather-grandson combinations to play Test cricketers. The others are George and Dean Headley, Jahangir and Bazid Khan, Denis and Nick Compton, and Vic Richardson and the Chappell brothers.

 

2.  One of the tallest cricketers

 

Tremlett belongs to the breed of tall bowlers. His height of six feet and seven inches makes him one of the most dreaded bowlers with the largest frames of the game. He made the utmost use of his height to extract that extra bit of bounce from the surface.

 

3.  Handy with the bat

 

Tremlett was a handy customer with the bat lower down the order, his 10 First-Class half-centuries corroborates the belief. 

 

4.  Prestigious award

 

Tremlett was honoured with the esteemed NBC Denis Compton Award in two consecutive years – 2000 and 2001.

 

5.  Missed on a hat-trick

 

Tremlett made his One-Day International (ODI) debut against Bangladesh at Trent Bridge in June 2005. He was on the brink of creating history but luck didn’t favour him. He picked two early wickets with the new ball and was on a hat-trick when the ball failed to disturb the bails of Mohammad Ashraful after striking the stumps.

 

6.  Impactful debut Test debut series

 

Tremlett made his Test debut against India at Lord’s in 2007 at the iconic Lord’s. In his debut series, he marked his presence in world cricket as he bagged 13 wickets at an average of 29.69 in from three Tests.

 

7.  Hampshire to Surrey

 

Tremlett was a regular at Hampshire but in 2009 he was roped in by Surrey.  He got a kick- start to his with Surrey career, and was among the wicket-takers whenever he put those hard yards.  

 

8.  Chiselled his path again into the Test side

 

Tremlett’s good run with Surrey sculpted his spot in the national Test side in the historic 2010-11  Ashes Down Under. He justified his selection as he picked 17 wickets from three Tests which he played at a remarkable average of 23.35.  

 

9.  Perth Test

 

Tremlett made the headlines in the Perth Test of the 2010 Ashes Down Under same series. He ripped through the Australian line-up with his pace and bounce and had eight Australian scalps to his name in the entire match.

 

10.  Best figures

 

Tremlett’s career best came in the third Test against Sri Lanka at Southampton in 2011 where he claimed six wickets in an innings and gave away6 for 48 runs. The match resulted in a draw but Tremlett was awarded with Player of the Match trophy.  

 

11.  Injuries compelled him to retire

 

Incessant injuries played a massive role in Tremlett’s cricketing career; he often suffered from knee and back injuries which took a heavy toll of him. Eventually he announced his retirement recently on August 21, 2015.

 

12.  Significant figures in Test cricket

 

Tremlett finished his Test career with 53 wickets in his basket from 12 Test outings at a decent average of 27. He also had couple of five-wicket hauls to his name.
