Former Australian cricketer Doug Walters has disclosed that after being convinced to have laser treatment by golfer legend and friend Jack Newton, he has not puffed on cigarettes for five years. “I am a good friend of Jack Newton’s, we were in A-grade at drinking and smoking and most days we would be into it at the golf club,’ said the cricket icon.

In The Courier Mail report, Walters reveals about how he quit cigarettes, he said, “Jack had this laser treatment and I thought that it was interesting he had been off the smokes. I told him to get the Doc to give me a ring, I wouldn’t mind going to have a look at the treatment he had.”

“I had the treatment and I am laying there on the couch and this lady was doing all this stuff and I was thinking I wish she would hurry up so I could get downstairs to have a smoke. I had my smokes in my pocket but I got downstairs and I didn’t feel like a cigarette. I thought I’d wait until I got home and I got home and I didn’t feel like one, so I thought I’d have one the next day. I have waited over five and a half years and I still haven’t felt like one,’’ he added.

The 69-year-old country boy who represented Australia in 74 Tests and scored 5357 runs at an average of 48.26 between 1965 and 1981 often relaxed by lighting up a smoke, 50 cigarettes a day for most of his life revealed how going cold turkey was one of his greatest achievements.

“For a lot of my life if I slept in and went to bed very early I was down to 50 (cigarettes a day). I climbed up a little bit higher than 50 on most occasions. I am still alive so I must feel better for giving up smoking,’’ he concluded.
