With every major global event, the ICC’s role and commitment over the issue of expanding the game and giving associate nations their due comes under the scanner. With the ICC World T20 2016 underway in India, game’s governing body has once again come under attack by the associate nations for the number of games they get to play at global level. Most of the times, it becomes a battle between Ireland and ICC. This time however, two unlikely parties have got involved in it.
Scotland captain Preston Mommsen, after his side went out of the tournament in the first round, said during the post-match press-conference, “Between the 2015 World Cup and the first match of the World T20 2016 qualifiers, I have played just one match.” Commentator and cricket expert Harsha Bhogle tweeted on the matter and what followed was a ‘tweet-war’. Bhogle wrote:
I completely understand the thoughts of the Associates but sometimes it doesn’t help to live with negativity (more)

You can either moan about how little you have or you can make the most of whatever you have. For the hungry, opportunity resides everywhere — Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) March 12, 2016
The tweets apparently caused a furore in the Scot camp, as first captain Mommsen and then his teammates George Munsey and Matt Machan jumped into the conversation. All the three players were surprised by Bhogle’s sudden change of mind and also of the fact that he questioned their team’s hunger. Mommsen wrote:
‘Opportunity resides everywhere’ – Absolutely bamboozled by ur views @bhogleharsha. Do not question the hunger! https://t.co/TlFhpeIcX9

@PrestonMommsen @bhogleharsha “I’m in strong favour of associates” ur words an hour ago…. Now questioning our hunger? We never stop #pride — George Munsey (@GeorgeMunsey) March 12, 2016
@PrestonMommsen @bhogleharsha wherent the India team recently complaining because they played TOO much cricket??

Sensing a backlash, Bhogle quickly tried to control the damage with his new tweet:
@PrestonMommsen Preston, was a wider thought. But my views are in more detail on facebook. Have always supported the emerging nations. — Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) March 12, 2016
He posted on Facebook and tried to diffuse to situation. Here’s what he posted:
My posts on twitter need a longer explanation. I am, and will always be, a supporter of taking cricket to further…
