A lot has been said and written about the West Indian cricketers and their choice of club over country. Of late, the West Indian cricketers have looked seemingly disinterested on the field. They lack the motivation and pride in representing their team and seem to be like going through the motions. All this has reflected in their performance, which has taken a massive hit.
Adding to their woes, pacer Jerome Taylor recently embarrassed the West Indies team during a two-day tour match with a Victorian XI that featured students, an electrician, a policeman and two players with First-Class experience. Taylor was involved in a horrendous fielding blunder, when he was caught gazing the empty stands instead of focusing on the game.
After declaring on 7 for 303, West Indian skipper Jason Holder was bowling in the 14th over when Jake Hancock, who was batting on 22, hooked the ball to fine leg. It could have been a regulation catch for Taylor, but he was instead leaning on the fence with his back to play, gazing into a near-empty grandstand. Hancock couldn’t believe his luck as he remained unbeaten on 80 before rain halted the game.
Taylor only turned around when teammates yelled out that the ball was heading in his direction. He awkwardly attempted to stop the ball which bounced past for a boundary. Lacklustre fielding was one of the West Indies’ many woes in Hobart, where Australia won the first Test by an innings and 212 runs within three days. This entire episode has again raised questions on the attitude of West Indies players towards their game.
