The day three of the first Test started with India taking the field to bat. Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane struck half-centuries and captain Virat Kohli was batting along with Rohit Sharma. Kohli and Rahane shared a 101-run partnership.

 

Kohli became the third Indian to score a century on captaincy debut.

 

Australia declared their first innings at 517 for the loss of seven wicket. The second day of the Test was halted by rain at regular intervals. David Warner, Michael Clarke and Steven Smith scored centuries for Australia.

 

For India, Mohammed Shami, Varun Aaron and Karn Sharma picked up two wickets each.
