Australia finished the Day One of the third Test against India in Melbourne on 259 for five. In an evenly fought contest between bat and ball, neither side dominated the Boxing Day.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat in front of a crowd of almost 70,000. The Test marks debut of Joe Burns from Australia and KL Rahul from India. Australia made another change by adding Ryan Harris to the team in place of Mitchell Starc, while for India Mohammed Shami came in for Varun Aaron.

India started well with the in-form David Warner getting dismissed in the second over. Opener Chris Rodgers added 115 with Shane Watson. Both the batsmen fell at the score of 115, with Rodgers scoring 57 and Watson 52. However, once again the star batsman for Australia was their captain Steve Smith who remained unbeaten on 72.

For India, Shami and Umesh Yadav, both picked up two wicket each.
