In the end it was a Caribbean show that prevailed at the Eden Gardens. Sunil Narine and Andre Russell starred as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who dropped as many as six catches managed to win the thriller by a wicket. It was a see-saw ride till the last ball which the hosts managed to pull it their way.

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) batted first and put up a formidable total of 183 on the board. Glenn Maxwell finally came good, so did David Miller and at one stage they looked set to post in excess of 200. Narine, who had a tough season so far, once again showed what he meant to the KKR outfit. He delivered another splendid spell where he bowled four overs, gave away just 19 and picked up four crucial wickets.

Chasing a total of 184, KKR maintained the run-rate at the start but in between lost a flurry of wickets. The trusted duo of Yusuf Pathan and Russell once again stepped in as they added 53 from just 25-balls. Russell struck the joint fastest fifty in this edition of Indian Premier League before falling in the 18th over. It was Piyush Chawla, who once again came good with the bat and ensured they wouldn’t lose but got dismissed with one required from two balls. In end, a run from a leg-bye off the penultimate ball saw KKR triumph as they moved to the top position in the points table.

Turning point: At one stage KKR needed 82 from seven overs and that wasn’t going to easy. Russell then launched an onslaught on Axar Patel, picking 24 runs from the 14th over. That over brought KKR back in the contest.
