Pace bowlers guided Mumbai Indians (MI) to a stunning win as they managed their second triumph in the eighth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). At one stage Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) looked like they would win the match quite comfortably but that was not to be as Mitchell McClenaghan and Lasith Malinga bowled MI to a much needed victory.
Batting first, MI scored 157 and Lendl Simmons got them to a good start scoring 51 from 42 balls. However, they couldn’t capitalise on the start and managed only 157. Shikhar Dhawan got SRH off to a flier and was particularly severe on ace off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. SRH were on course for the win but some real tight bowling from MI dented their hopes.
Turning point: SRH had six wickets in hand and needed 34 runs from three overs. In Twenty20 cricket that’s quite achievable, however McClenaghan bowled a three-run over and picked up the wicket of Ravi Bopara. With 31 needed from two overs, SRH needed a big one but Malinga once again stood up and showed why he is still an asset to this MI outfit. He bowled a maiden and picked up three wickets. The match was lost in these two overs.
