After a couple of close finishes that didn’t go in their favour, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) managed to pull off a win against the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), in a game marred by rain.
KKR won the toss and elected to field and SRH blazed away to a brilliant start courtesy their skipper David Warner. The Australian southpaw shared a 130-run partnership from 86 balls and that set the foundation for a huge total. Though SRH couldn’t manage the score they would have liked, they still ended up with 176.
The game got affected by rain and when play resumed, KKR were set a target of 118 from 12 overs. KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir didn’t get going this time but Robin Uthappa got off to a flier. KKR were well on course for the chase. At one stage, they needed 37 runs from three overs and with power hitters like Yusuf Pathan and Manish Pandey at the crease; it seemed that the win was a matter of time.
Turning point: A brilliant 10th over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar turned the game in SRH’s favour. The Indian swing bowler gave away only five runs. The next over Praveen Kumar went for seven and it SRH’s game.
Brief scores:
Sunrisers Hyderabad 176 for 4 in 20 overs [Shikhar Dhawan 54 (46), David Warner 91 (55); Morne Morkel 4-0-31-2] bt Kolkata Knight Riders 101 for 4 in 12 overs [Robin Uthappa 34 (21), Manish Pandey 33 (24)] – by 16 runs (D/L method)
