Delhi Daredevils (DD) keep their hopes alive to qualify for playoffs of the ninth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL)by beating table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 6 wickets in a last-over thriller. IPL 2016, Match 52, Pick of the tweets: Delhi Daredevils vs Sunrisers Hyderabad at Raipur
DD skipper Zaheer Khan invited David Warner-led SRH to bat first on Raipur’s seaming-friendly track. SRH openers Warner and Shikhar Dhawan started the proceedings well, but an excellent run out by Carlos Brathwaite changed the course of their game, as wickets kept tumbling at the other end. However, Warner kept the scoreboard ticking and played a captain’s knock by scoring 56-ball 73. Even though other batsmen couldn’t even touch 20-run mark, SRH managed to post a decent total of 158 with the loss of seven wickets. Brathwaite was the pick of the bowler for DD as he scalped two wickets, which included Warner and Yuvraj Singh. But it was the duo of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jayant Yadav who failed to keep a lid on the runs.
DD started their chase by losing the in-form Quinton de Kock. However, unlike SRH, they managed to recover, as Rishabh Pant and Karun Nair put up a swashbuckling partnership of 81 runs off 59 balls, which actually turned the game in DD’s favour. To make matters worse for SRH, they dropped two catches. Further, Barinder Sran‘s two wickets and Mustafizur Rahman‘s outstanding penultimate over revived SRH’s hopes, as DD needed 11 runs in the last over. Bhuvneshwar Kumar did well to keep the onslaught at bay, but a boundary and two runs in the last two balls by Nair helped DD edge past SRH by six wickets.
Turning Point: After the fall of the first wicket of DD opener Quinton de Kock, SRH bowlers couldn’t take wickets at regular intervals to add pressure on the opponent. And, to put DD in a commanding position, Rishabh Pant and Karun Nair ensured a match-winning partnership of 73 runs off 59 balls, which turned the course of game.
Brief Scores:
Delhi Daredevils 161 for 4 in 20 overs [Karun Nair 83 (59)*; Barinder Sran 4-0-34-2, Mustafizur Rahman 4-0-24-1] beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 158 for 7 in 20 overs [David Warner 73 (56); Carlos Brathwaite 4-0-27-2] by 6 wickets.
