Mumbai Indians (MI) bounce back in the ninth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) with their 25-run win against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at Mohali. Despite some promising batting, KXIP failed to win and continue their poor form.
Once again, team winning the toss opted to field first as David Miller-led KXIP side invited MI to bat first. KXIP got off to a flying start by getting MI skipper Rohit Sharma on the second ball of the match for a duck, which was also his sixth duck in the history of IPL. After that, Ambati Rayudu joined southpaw Parthiv Patel at the crease whose previous three best scores came against KXIP side and once again he performed against them. Rayudu piled some runs and built a healthy partnership with Parthiv, who was playing pretty slow but placed his innings sensibly as he went on to score a tenacious 58-ball 81. Rayudu too played brilliant knock of 65 from 37 balls and laid the foundation for a good total. In between, Parthiv got a life as he was was caught of a no-ball on a delivery from Mitchell Johnson and then Rayudu was dropped by Mohit Sharma. After the duo was dismissed Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard tried their best but couldn’t take MI over 200 and as they managed to post a good total of 189 on board and that was all because of an excellent last over by Mohit, who took two wickets and concede only four runs in that over.
While chasing, KXIP’s Murali Vijay did show some class but once again failed to convert it into a big score and Manan Vohra too didn’t manage to stay for long. Further, Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell provided some hope for KXIP and stitched a good partnership of 89 runs but just like previous matches, the Australian left-hander couldn’t convert that into a big one and got out. Maxwell tried his best and completed his half-century but couldn’t provide a win for KXIP. Skipper David Miller too tried but never got support from other end and lost the match to MI by 25 runs. This MI’s victory credit goes to Parthiv and Rayudu’s batting followed by some excellent bowling from Tim Southee, Bumrah and Mitchell McClenaghan, especially in death overs.
Turning Point: Till the time Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell were at the crease, hopes for KXIP were alive and at one stage it looked they can pull this game. But Marsh was clean bowled by Southee on the final ball of 15th over and from there, match started turning in the favour of MI.
Brief Scores:
Mumbai Indians 189 for 6 in 20 overs [Parthiv Patel 81 (58), Ambati Rayudu 65 (37); Mohit Sharma 4-0-38-3, Sandeep Sharma 4-0-20-1] beat to Kings XI Punjab 164 for 7 in 20 overs [Glenn Maxwell 56 (39), Shaun Marsh 45 (34); Jasprit Bumrah 4-0-26-3, Mitchell McClenaghan 4-0-32-2, Tim Southee 4-0-28-2] by 25 runs.
